The US bans vegemite!

Posted by Ray @ 4:04 pm

Yes, you read that correctly (via). Apparently, vegemite contains folate, which according to US regulations can only be put on bread, cereal, flours, pasta, and other grain products. The regulations were originally intended to increase folate intake for pregnant women, as the increase reduced the risk of birth defects.

But the rule has apparently been read as disallowing folate in other foods, hence the ban. And while some Australians lament the banning of a national symbol, others think the ban is a hoax.

Whatever the case, it’s funny that so much noise is being made about a salty, smelly, black-brown substance essentially made from beer breweries’ leftovers. To non-Australians, the stuff is foul. I mean it! Guys, stop trying to get your Aussie friends to eat durians, man up and consume some vegemite.

(Note to readers: I am well aware that the comic navigation system is broken. I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong, but not making any headway… will keep you posted.)
