Site Updates
Posted by Ray @ 5:30 pmThe weird strip navigation bug has been fixed.
Hopefully, it will tide us over while we get the site back up to speed… I get the strangest impulses to update the comic whenever the exams draw near.
The US bans vegemite!
Posted by Ray @ 4:04 pmYes, you read that correctly (via). Apparently, vegemite contains folate, which according to US regulations can only be put on bread, cereal, flours, pasta, and other grain products. The regulations were originally intended to increase folate intake for pregnant women, as the increase reduced the risk of birth defects.
But the rule has apparently been read as disallowing folate in other foods, hence the ban. And while some Australians lament the banning of a national symbol, others think the ban is a hoax.
Whatever the case, it’s funny that so much noise is being made about a salty, smelly, black-brown substance essentially made from beer breweries’ leftovers. To non-Australians, the stuff is foul. I mean it! Guys, stop trying to get your Aussie friends to eat durians, man up and consume some vegemite.
(Note to readers: I am well aware that the comic navigation system is broken. I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong, but not making any headway… will keep you posted.)
Yargh! iTunes Sucks!
Posted by Ray @ 5:21 pmSo I plug my iPod into my iBook, because it’s formatted in HFS and not FAT32 and my windows box can’t load new songs into it. But my iBook’s iTunes library has been empty since May, when my hard disk decided to quit on me.
Thing is, I wanted to add a couple of new songs to my iPod. So I plug it in, and-
POOF!
iTunes auto-loads and “updates” my iPod with its playlist. Which is empty. Which means my iPod is now empty.
Heartpain.
Mac Word users, heads up
Posted by Ray @ 1:49 amJust finished vomiting out a long assignment.
Checked the word count on Microsoft Word 2003 on my Windows box: 4264. Checked the word count of the exact same document on Microsoft Word 2004 on my Mac: 4271.

What, is Word for Mac more kiasu about exceeding word limits than Word for Windows? Can Mac users tout this as a “feature”?
Why is the word count algorithm different? Microsoft’s knowledge base is silent on the issue. More importantly, what exactly is giving up the difference?
Turns out they treat hyphenated words differently:

That’s not all. I couldn’t reproduce the bug reliably. Here’s the most “reliable” way I got it to appear:
1) Find a word document made on Windows, that gives a different word count when opened on a Mac.
2) Open that file on the Mac.
3) Now open a new document on the Mac, and type in any hyphenated word.
4) Check your word count.
5) Open a new word on Windows, type in the same word. Check your word count.
…Seriously. What gives?
