Iraq, Iran and Syria, Oh My!
Posted by Ray @ 4:55 pmThe United States storms an Iranian embassy in Iraq.
This follows Bush’s 180-degree turn-around order sending an additional 20,000 troops (at least) to Iraq. In that same speech, he also said he’d deal with Iran and Syria, who he alleges is helping terrorists win (cue counterstrike reference).
Meanwhile, the Senate, led by Joe Biden, says if Bush tries to charge into Iran without Congressional approval, there will be “a constitutional confrontation”, which I take to be a pleasant euphemism for having hell to pay.
Then just a few hours ago, a US embassy in Athens was hit by a rocket.
…
You know, way back in 2003 when the missiles were flying into Iraq, we all thought it was pretty awesome. Even if you’re against war, even knowing hospitals and children were getting bombed, it was still oddly beautiful to see the explosions over Channel NewsAsia.
And when we saw the statute of Saddam collapse, we all thought “Hurrah! It’s over, there shall be some semblance of peace now.”
But the fighting went on, and on, and on… and here we are, it’s 2007, and we’re fast approaching the 4-year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Yet the fighting goes on! For what? Who knows.
A few years back, we were all making jokes about “who was next” on America’s hit-list. Jon Stewart would get guests on his show and ask them, “So when are we invading Syria?” His guests laughed, his audience laughed, I laughed.
I’m not laughing anymore.
