Forbidden Chestnuts

Just watched Forbidden Chestnuts: Portrait of a Brokeback Geisha. Much more enjoyable than Jack and the Beansprout, which struck me as childish, except for a few bits of clever humour (the para para dance was funny).
Forbidden Chestnuts is a parody show, so the more in-tune with local culture you are, the more you’ll get out of it. Too bad I didn’t get most of the Chinese bits.
Unfortunately, we had to endure a lot of Rodney whats-his-name in lieu of Hossan Leong and Jonathan Lim. I guess it’s important to give exposure, but come on, at least take some singing classes. Judy Ngo was much better, demonstrating versatility in performance; Rodney tended to be “Rodney plays role XXXX”, whereas Judy was XXXX.
Forbidden Chestnuts is still running for 5 more days at the Drama Centre (third floor of the new National Library). Tickets are priced from $50 downwards, and I believe they’re having some sort of discount if you buy at the counter on the day itself.
Go support the local arts scene!
