Jack Thompson gets Disciplined
Posted by Ray @ 4:21 pmGamePolitics is reporting that Jack Thompson, everyone’s favourite anti-videogame activist, is facing disciplinary hearings at the Florida Supreme Court.
You may remember Mr. Thompson from the time he reneged on a $10,000 donation (that Penny-Arcade made in his stead). Or from the time he compared Sony to Pearl Harbor. Given the gravity of the insult he is to the legal profession, I’m surprised it took this long for daddy to mete out a good spanking.
In any case, if he gets disbarred, I wonder who will take his place? Videogame violence is one of the major controversies in the US, and will inevitably be one of the talking points leading up to the 2008 elections. Is it too much to hope that someone benign and competent will replace Jack? Or are we going to end up with someone who doesn’t understand the issue, who will campaign against videogames just because it will earn them political brownie points (I’m looking at you, Hillary Clinton)?
People who don’t play videogames on a regular basis should not be mouthing off on how “evil” it is. If you know nothing about the subject, please, STFU and listen. I guarantee you that us gamers have a better, balanced, nuanced perspective.
