A Rock and a Hard Place
Posted by Ray @ 11:16 amOn the one hand, I have a take-home exam, presentation and assignment due within the next 2 weeks or so. I have started on none of them.
On the other, I have Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.
This is going to be an interesting 2 weeks.
I’m part-way through the GDI campaign, and it almost feels like the old C&C games. That is to say, the acting is so bad it’s good, the action is over-the-top, and you have a lot of fun blowing things to pieces. Did I mention it’s really, really pretty?
Oh, and I got to try out the new faction, the alien Scrin, in skirmish. All I can say is, you should never, ever let a Scrin player tech up. You get not one, not two, but three badass units, all of which can completely ruin a GDI or NOD player. A few carriers, a few annihilator tripods and one giant mothership is all you need.
On the other hand, if you’re playing NOD you should rush, rush, rush! Recon bikes and scorpion tanks are devastating to the GDI player who is gearing up for vehicles or aircraft.
Gonna try multiplayer tomorrow. Hope I don’t get my arse kicked by Korean RTS nuts.
Neil Gaiman’s Stardust Trailer (For Real)

Posted by Zeng @ 1:45 amBack from reservist.
For some guys, this is a form of escape from their daily routines and sense of remembering those precious memories of their former “glory” days…the fun days …ahhh what can be more better then reliving it just for a few weeks?
For many others is just a compulsory event that we just have to go through( Unless your too expensive or too important*cough*).We get the job done.Make new friends ( or catch up with your old ones ) and become “stupid” once again.
My experience this year was feel with mixed emotions and thoughts.
Mainly a total sense of my time being wasted, to having met people with really unique personalities and backgrounds, some being good and thus great company and even earning my respect for them.
While the rest ….was just ranging from total disbelieve to certain situations that I never dream could happen, to rock-bottom dissapointment from individuals that I thought could had made much better decisions or judgement on the issue at hand.
Its usually at this moments when things go “crazy” and i ponder how could this be happening.. someone would pat me on the shoulder and say, “This is how it is, tahan ( endure ) for a few more days and it will be over.”
That saying, as simple and hard as it seemed, has always been true….and when the time is up, we go back to where we left off from our lives, back to our families and our work, although most of the time our work will be piled up to the brink by the time we come back and we spent many OT hours again just to compensate where we left our work. cheers!
Okay enough of that.
Theres a new longer trailer for Disney Pixars new film,Ratatouille,it has a more concrete storyline for the movie. Its abit low in quality with chinese subtitles but watching it really makes me all hyped out for it be in the big screen soon!* pixar groupie cheer!*
Neil Gaiman’s Stardust Trailer
Posted by Ray @ 3:26 pmDear movie trailer marketting guys: please stop using music from Pirates of the Caribbean for every *#%& trailer there is. It was annoying to recognize it the first time on TV, now it’s just supremely old.
But if you can look past that: Neil Gaiman’s Stardust trailer here! Or see the embedded one, below:
Take Two sues Jack Thompson; Thompson Responds
Posted by Ray @ 3:22 pmHere we go again!
Take Two, the company that brought us Grand Theft Auto, recently sued our good friend Jack Thompson to try and stop him from having GTA4 and Manhunt 2 declared as public nuisances. The instrument they’re using is none other than the First Amendment - you know, the one about freedom of speech.
Thompson then responded with one of the most blissfully ignorantly ironic letters I’ve seen. Quote:
I have been praying, literally, that Take-Two and its lawyers would do something so stupid, so arrogant, so dumb, even dumber than what they have to date done, that such a misstep would enable me to destroy Take-Two…
This lawsuit, filed in US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, is, without a doubt, the single dumbest thing I have ever seen any lawyers do in my thirty years of practicing law…
Ah, dear Jack. So let’s see, here’s what doesn’t qualify as “dumb” to you:
1) Offering a US$10,000 reward to a charity for anyone who makes a game where a vengeful father goes on a killing rampage, destroying videogame company CEOs, retail store employees and E3 attendees.
2) Then when somebody actually made the game, reneging on the entire thing, saying it was just a satire, a la Jonathan Swift. Except your literary skills don’t quite match up to his.
3) Then, when the real men over at Penny-Arcade decided to pay the $10,000 to a charity in your name, you try to sic the Seattle Police Department on them, claiming criminal harassment.
4) Oh yeah, and what about that time in 1988 when you went up to Attorney-General Janet Reno, first female AG of the United States, and passed her a note that said “I, Janet Reno, am a 1) Homosexual; 2) Bisexual; 3) Heterosexual. If you do not respond by a certain date, you will be deemed to have checked one of the first two boxes.” I’m sure that was real smart of you.
I am torn between laughing at you and wanting to kill you, dear Jack. I’ll settle for the former… at least I have delicious entertainment once every few months.

Posted by Ray @ 3:33 pmA poignantly charming short film: On s’Embrasse?
Wil Wheaton’s meeting with WILLIAM F**KING SHATNER, part 1, in which a huge fan gets treated like crap, and part 2, in which they all lived happily ever after. It’s Star Trek (Wil Wheaton played Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation) but it’s fun for all to read. I love the part where Michael Dorn (Worf) offered to kick Shatner’s ass.
Oldie but goodie: You may look thin and be too fat. Hmm, I need to sign up for one of these internal body-fat scans.
Super-duper Heroes SPOILERS: click. The agonizing wait for Heroes’ return just got worse.
Remember Jeff Han and his super-cool haptics touch-screen interface? It’s back, with improvements. At night, I have wet dreams about Apple’s 33″ cinema display mating with this baby.
Wordpress deleting comments?
Posted by Ray @ 1:11 pmHmm, something weird is going on. Two comments posted by one of our readers got nuked overnight. Since neither Zeng or I touched them, it can only be either a bug in wordpress, or someone’s gotten a hold of our password, or I woke up in the middle of the night in a sleepwalking fit and deleted comments. I am examining the databases to see if everything’s okay.
In the meantime, I’ve changed the password to something abominable. Not that the old one wasn’t, but still. My apologies to any reader whose comments appear to have disappeared - rest assured we don’t censor anything on SB without excellent reason, like gahmen intervention, and even then I’d tell you.
Update: it’s just my spam filter working in some weird delayed fashion. Apparently if a user posts multiple comments over a short period of time he or she gets penalized. I’ve made the rules a bit more lax.
European PS3 Backwards Compatibility = 1/12!
Posted by Ray @ 1:08 pmA German shop got their hands on a European PAL PS3, and decided to test its backwards compatibility with 12 PS2 games:
God of War
MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
MGS 3: Snake Eater
Shadow of the Colossus
Guitar Hero 2
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Okami
GTA: Liberty City Stories
Eragon
Final Fantasy X-2
Ratchet & Clank 3
Lumines Plus
As you can see, the list is made up of some rather prominent titles, including MGS2 and MGS3, Shadow of the Colossus, and the original God of War. Guess how many games worked?
One.
Eragon.
Now, let’s be charitable here and assume that Sony will release firmware updates that will allow for some titles to be backwards compatible. Let’s also be charitable and note that these are just twelve games. Even then, to not have Metal Gear Solid and God of War work out of the box… that’s criminal.
Even importation will not help, backwards-compatibility is region locked. If you want your backwards-compatibility, you have to mod your PS3, which is illegal. How many ways can Sony screw its customers? The PS3 needs its PS2 library to sell, the games that will make the PS3 a mainstay in itself are still a long, long way away.
So tell me, Sony… why should anybody in Europe buy a PS3?
Now a question for Singapore readers: does anyone have a PS3 yet? Can you report on its backwards compatibility? Drop us a line, we want to know!
Cheating girlfriend gets dumped live on radio
Posted by Ray @ 2:36 amDanny Dumps. It’s on digg, so chances are you’ve heard it already. But if you don’t digg, well, here it is.
Basically, Danny calls this cheating c**t, pretends he’s a jeweller, and “accidentally” lets slip that her boyfriend was making an engagement ring for her. He really lets her have it, acting all shocked that the girlfriend picked up, asking her to promise him not to let the boyfriend know, promise!
The first question out of her mouth is “what sort of ring is it?”
The second, predictably, is “how much is it worth?”
I hated her already.
Then Danny drops the bomb: she’s actually getting dumped for being a dirty little tart. *Click*.
It’s flabbergastingly audacious in its delivery, and I fully condone the public humiliation this girl was put through (hey, if it were a guy I’d condone it, too). Good on you, Craig!
Israeli Ambassadors are Kinky
Posted by Ray @ 2:06 pmJust ask the ambassador to El Salvador, who was found drunk and gagged with bondage gear in the Israeli embassy compound.
I wonder who had him gagged. Perhaps it was the El Salvadorian ambassador, sticking it to the man. You like it, don’t you? Huh? Yeah, take that, biatch!
Poor Israel.
Bukkake Milk - Oishi desu!
Posted by Ray @ 10:05 pmFrom Japan comes this advertisement for bukkake milk (ooh, our search engine referrals just spiked). Both the video and the page I’ve linked to is NSFW, so exercise caution.
Ridiculous as the video is, I’ve seen so much weird stuff come out of Japan that I suspect it’s not fake. Also, in Japanese, the word is innocent enough. If any of you are wondering what bukkake means, well… click here (link goes to wikipedia, is completely SFW, though perhaps not your stomach).
Game Developer’s Conference ‘07
Posted by Ray @ 3:22 pmThe console wars are so on. With E3 dead, GDC and TGS remain the only two major gaming trade shows still operating (though PAX is fast becoming a favourite). This past week has been a fun one for GDC followers, with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all squaring off against each other.
Microsoft’s XBOX360 was showing off Mass Effect and Crysis, the latter with visuals so jaw-droppingly good you have to remind yourself it’s real-time, none of that pre-rendered stuff.
Sony shot back with a one-two punch of their new Playstation Home feature, a network environment, and a cute little physics-based platformer called LittleBigPlanet. Its whimsy has to be seen to be appreciated:
Of course, Sony’s biggest problem is still their loss of GTAIV as an exclusive. Now they’ve only got Heavenly Sword and Metal Gear Solid 4 to pull up their birches, and it’s unclear if they can stand up to Microsoft’s Fable 2 - Halo 3 - Mass Effect - Crysis exclusives.
Nintendo came out swinging with Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on the DS. Wind Waker’s cel-shaded look is back, and the game looks absolutely gorgeous.
My only complaint is I don’t have the time or the funds to play these games.
